April

What an amazing month March turned out to be, we celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary for an entire week, starting of at Le Meridien Al Aqah and finishing at Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa, with a trip to Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Emirates Golf Club inbetween!!  The weather has finally broken and we are experiencing a rise in temperatures, it's no secret I prefer the hotter months over the cooler ones. It's Easter this month, so I hope the Easter Bunny is really kind to you all. Have a fabulous month wherever are you are.

If you love food then you are going to love the Philips Festival of Taste Dubai 2012, just reading through the list of Chef's who are attending this event is enough to make you want to reserve your tickets now!

With Gary Rhodes, Aldo Zilli, Armani Peck, Wai Hung Ho, Ranu Irawan are just a few of the Chef's headlining the event.

Now in its 5th year, this year looks like it may well be their biggest event.  Twenty six restaurants are taking part this year including The Rivington Grill, The Ivy, Seafire, Zafran, Buddha Bar, Saffron and many more. There are so many restaurants that I have not visited it makes sense to visit the festival to check out their menu's and have tasters.

There is also a Chefs' Theatre holding culinary masterclasses throughout the three day event. Favourite Things have sponsored a Kids area (always a bonus) and then there is the British Airways VIP Lounge to take a bit of time out (only valid for VIP ticket holders).

Ticket prices are very reasonable starting at 60 dhs, there is a special offer currently running, just quote the word TWIT or FACE into the promo box and you will able to buy two tickets for 99 dhs.  Entry for under 12's is totally free!!

Enjoy!!

As most of you are aware I am a big supporter of women in business in the UAE, it's tough setting up a business anywhere in the World but I think it's a bit tougher when you are a female of the species in a Middle Eastern Country.

It's with great pleasure that another young lady has launched a new business right here in Dubai but as it's an online business she can deliver anywhere in the UAE, free!!!  I first came across the site on Twitter where Tanya, the enthusiastic owner of Party Souq asked me to do a write up on her new venture. Party Souq currently has more than 2000 items available from an extensive range of party themed supplies. There is everything for a perfect party from Birthdays to Easter and with Valentines Day just around the corner there are some fabulous valentine party packs.

We all have a reason to celebrate something every year, and now we don't have to trail around the shops trying to find the perfect theme, at the click of a finger Party Souq will take over!!!

Congratulations Tanya, I am pretty sure you have a huge success on your hands.

It has been many years since we had been on The Bateaux Dubai for one reason or another but shortly after Christmas I saw a promotion for High Tea on board with a short cruise up and down the Creek.  As it was a day time event, and suitable for families I decided it was worthy of investigation.

On Saturday we headed down to the Creek, just before 3 pm and boarded The Bateaux Dubai, we were greeted by Imran who had a huge smile on his face and three mocktails in his hand! they were mango, orange and lychee syrup, divine!!  If you do decide to do the Cruise make sure you bring a few dirhams for the parking meter, it is free until 4 pm.

Mitten headed up to the Upper Deck and a had a great time on the bean bag cushions.  As other families arrived we made our way into the cabin of the boat, it is beautiful, light and airy with air conditioning, not such an issue in January but later in the year it will be a blessing.

As we prepared to set sail, Imran came and poured us water followed by tea/coffee, then along came the three tier cake holder with an array of sandwiches and cakes, the lemon meringue pie was fabulous.  This was followed by two scones perfectly placed in their own holder with clotted cream, jam and marmalade. We were also presented with some fabulous fruit sweets and little coloured biscuits, Mitten was well impressed, just as well as neither of us were planning sharing our scones!!  By this time we had set sail, the guitarist on board was playing that old favourite, by Rod Stewart, We are Sailing, made us laugh but it set the ambience all the same.  Our champagne glasses had been filled and we raised a toast to 2012, the setting was perfect.

We headed up the Creek, with little dhows and abras winding their way across the creek, doing their daily business.  Mitten went back up to the bean bags for the last fifteen minutes, and we eventually arrived back at the shore just before 4.30 pm.

The Manager on board made a point of coming and speaking to all the guests asking for their feedback on their experience, he told me with enthusiasm that any guest who wanted to alter the food they had received or add to it only had to speak up, it was at this point that I had wished he had mentioned this before I had halved the lemon meringue pie with my husband and before we were about to disembark!!

A fabulous experience that will be repeated as soon as Nanna Armani arrives in the land of sand, this time I won't forget to request the extra lemon meringue pie!!

It's not often that I get invited anywhere so I was absolutely thrilled to accept an invitation from a friend for lunch at McGettigan's Irish Pub.  I wrote last week about my visit to The Bonnington Tower in Jumeirah Lake Towers and my dining experience in The Cavendish Restaurant. I must live in a bubble because this week I discovered the much talked about McGettigan's Irish Pub at the Bonnington Tower.  I was aware that it was the winner of the What's On 2011, Best Pub Grub award, I was about to find out why.

Winding our way down the stairs to McGettigan's I was surprised at how big the area was and secluded too, which you would think was pretty impossible in an area like Jumeirah Lake Towers. The Pub itself is exactly how you would imagine an Irish Pub to be and I kept thinking of that drama filmed in Ireland, Ballykissangel.  The lunch time menu is comprehensive and has something for everyone, there was too much to choose from if you are craving real pub grub, but it appeared that EVERYONE was ordering the fish and chips, waiters were carrying tray after tray of fish and chips, I was delighted when my "date" ordered them, I went for the more healthy option of an open prawn and avocado sandwich.  The fish and chips were huge and come with massive hand-made chips and mushy peas.  I had a little taste of the fish, it was fabulous!!  My prawn and avocado sandwich didn't disappoint either, loads of prawns!!

There are some firm favourites on their menu, Irish Stew, Pork Bangers and Mash, Full Irish Breakfast with real bacon!! comes in two sizes with a "girly" portion for those not brave enough to take the main one! The sandwich that caught my eye was the Jumbo Breakfast Roll ... pork bacon, pork sausage, egg and mushrooms in a french baguette.

I was so impressed I went back today with The Geordie One, I had the smoked salmon, with roast beets, pea shoot and tartar sauce, and The Geordie One had the fish and chips and there were no complaints from her other than they were huge!

What can I say twice in one week, I must have liked it!!

Thank you McGettigans Pub!

On Sunday myself and The Geordie one took a little trip down to real Dubai to check out the newly opened Stables Bar and Restaurant. After a traumatic time trying to find the place, and a helpful valet driver we headed into the Stable!!!  quite literally!!!

The Stables is the brainchild of local resident Alex Bracken who has his feet firmly established in the hospitality industry in Dubai.  Even from the carpark I knew were going to enjoy our experience, the amazing stained glass windows that adorn the entrance will impress anyone never mind people who are passionate about the Equines.

The ground floor basically is a mock farm shop, then as you go up to the first floor you are welcomed into the Stables Bar, which is a mock stable!  it's really amazing the attention to detail that has been invested into the Bar, which has paddocks/stables to dine in and tables all individually named after famous race horses!

On the second floor is the Racecourse Restaurant, a fabulous open area with a warm feel to it, with amazing gothic chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, the tables this time are all named after famous racecourses, of course the main feature being The Meydan area.  The entire building has an amazing atmosphere, you really do feel that you are at a race meeting!

As the main restaurant isn't open yet, it's due to open to celebrate Valentines Day we decided to take a "stable" in the bar and order some lunch.  The Geordie One yet again opted for fish and chips which were served with Mancunian Caviar!!! Let's see if any of you can guess what that is.  I had the Chicken Ceasar Salad, and Mitten had a pork sausage sandwich.  Absolutely no complaints whatsoever about the food, served quickly, all fresh ingredients, and reasonably priced.  The Fish and Chips are only 50 dhs, the Ceaser Salad was 30 dhs.

The Bar has an extensive collection of beers and The Geordie One tried out the Belle Vue Kriek which is a lambic fruit beer from Belgium, it tasted of cherries!!  I was reliably informed that a pint will only set you back 25 dhs, which for Dubai is pretty cheap.

Anyway The Geordies approve The Stables 100% and we would both like to take this opportunity to wish Alex, Chef Romain and all the team good luck, we really do think you've backed a winner!

We have moved about Dubai quite a few times in recent years, the last move only being over the highway really but it has given me a chance to have a little hunt about Al Barsha.  On New Years Day we visited the Centro Barsha for lunch which was superb, find the article about that here. On my weekly trip up to Lulu I have driven past an Indian Restaurant called Bay Leaf for the last 6 months or so, every time I made a mental note in my mind to give it a try.  Then the summer struck and the dreaded season of the slipped disc saga, not driving didn't help.  Last week I got behind the wheel and headed over to Bayleaf and picked up a menu. We ordered take-away the following evening.

Atilla was wearing his brave pants and went for the Chicken Vindaloo and some onion Bhaji's, I opted for the Chicken Tikka Masala.  Ordering was painless, and the delivery arrived as promised within 40 minutes, and was piping hot, even the naan was hot and fresh!  the food was fabulous, rich in taste, well presented and VERY reasonably priced, the total bill came in at 77 dhs and that included extra rice.

You have the option of dining in their small restaurant or using their take-away service. You can find their website here and their full menu here.  Enjoy it, we certainly did!!

This article has been especially written for @dubainameshame, he loves a good curry!
