Topical

Today I am going to take a look at the Mum who has a bit of help a few times a week.  This is the category that most fall into and personally I find it alot more acceptable. We do have bigger houses here and too much marble flooring which can be a real killer.  However of course it isn't a killer for an Asian Maid, she must love marble floors.  I know for a fact that if we had to pay these ladies the going UK rate which I think is about 70 dhs an hour we would be cleaning the floors ourselves. We have the luxury of a Maid because of one reason, and one reason only, they are damn cheap.  If you hail from the South of England I think you would find that hourly rate closer to 100 dhs an hour.

I do have a lady who helps me, a lovely Phillipino Lady who comes once a week for four hours, she is my guilty pleasure, who joined our family when I moved into this Villa, which is pretty big and after three years of no help whatsoever I decided that I was going to have a bit of help with those damned marble floors.  Before she comes I run round like a lunatic tidying up, she is here to clean not tidy up a load of mess created by a lazy 6 year old. I feel I pay her well and have the utmost respect for her.

I don't make her wear a Maid's uniform, nor do I take her to the shops to push my trolley. She comes in and gets the mop out and gives the place a very thorough once over.

Now let's take a look at the Professional working woman, yes she has help a few times a week, and yes she deserves that pleasure as she is earning and it is her luxury to be able to come home to a nice clean house and unwind, prepare dinner and pamper the man in her life on her freshly laundered sheets.  I would fall into this category if I was in gainful employment however I don't feel that my husband should pay someone to do a job I am more than capable of doing, which realistically can be done in about 5 or 6 hours a week.

I didn't write this with the intention of upsetting anyone, it is just my feelings on the Maid (cleaner) situation in general.  I don't stand in judgement and never will.  What works for one family won't work for another.  However, I am pretty sure that I can probably count on one hand how many of you had any help whatsoever in the UK with your home, and the majority of you did work, whether it be full time or part time.

Now to those of you who justify having a maid because you need a babysitter, take a look around at your friends at the school gates, or the ones in your address book. I know, hand on my heart that I could pick up the phone to any one of my close friends and they would take Mitten over night for me, or even for a few hours if I needed to do something urgent. Personally I would prefer her to be with a like minded Mother, but that is just me.

Let's remember that the majority of these Maids (cleaners) deserve every single dirham they get and over the years I am sure that all of us have contributed heavily to subsidising education for their families, which can only be a good thing.

Interestingly I have just heard about a discussion taking place where a 20 year old son of one family is apparently having sexual relations with the Maid, I suppose at least they know where he is after he has done his science homework ....

On that note I bid you farewell.

Keep Cleaning
